When you have decided to study homeopathy you probably are going to compare different courses. Besides receiving the correct information about homeopathy, you probably also want to know about the educational standard and level of quality that a course has. When we created the classical homeopathy course, we had quality and practical application at the top of our list. The way we use case examples, present information about homeopathic remedies, and organize the internship are just some examples of how we make sure the course is a good preparation to become a classical homeopath. In this article, we will explain a little bit about this.
At our institution, we value high quality. We do not intend to provide a shallow course for self-help or treating minor complaints in family and friends. Rather, we aspire to train students to become full-fledged professionals who feel comfortable treating patients with varying degrees of complaints.
To achieve this goal, we have created a demanding, yet worthwhile, curriculum. We opt for the difficult road that results in the best overall quality instead of forgoing excellence to settle for an easier but less worthwhile course. It will assure you are appropriately prepared for a profession as a classical homeopath. Below, you can find an overview of the different methods of teaching that we apply throughout the course.
Application of theory to cases
One of our priorities is giving ample opportunities to practice the theory. Many schools explain the theory, provide examples, and provide some exercises. We, on the other hand, describe some theory but mainly provide you with many cases, so you have the chance to apply what you have learned throughout the course. At first, the paper cases are rather time-consuming, but practice makes perfect, and you will find you will be able to work through them more easily as you go. Our experience with our students has shown that these assignments are beneficial to develop a particular routine. During the second year of the course, you will start with more extensive paper cases that include the more advanced case analysis. These paper cases require time to do, but during the internship and when starting your clinic, this is rewarded by being able to treat patients more efficiently and with success. After all this practice, you will have that extra edge when starting your homeopathy career.
In the second year of the course, you will see several video cases of patients’ complete treatment. This will help to prepare you for the internship. Video cases are ideal for training yourself in listening and making notes like you would with patients of your own. Also, you will see how patients respond in real life. This step before the internship ensures you will be fully prepared for the real deal.
Studying materia medica (the symptoms of homeopathic remedies) is the foundation of any homeopathy course. Often, this is a tedious and laborious task that is confusing and sometimes difficult to understand. The reason for this is the extensive information that is nowadays available, as well as the varying experiences and contexts of the authors.
We have facilitated the study of the materia medica in several ways, making it much more manageable and practical in a unique way. First of all, we have selected a combination of materia medica books that are clear, practical, and well balanced between details and the big picture. This saves our students effort and money which would otherwise be spent on potentially vague or unreliable books. With the recommended materia medica books, you will be able to run your clinic very well, giving it a generous kick-start.
Another thing that is unique for our educational institution is that we provide verified and easy-to-understand information about the trade’s most essential tools: the homeopathic remedies. During the course, we will present about 280 of the essential remedies in our e-learning modules. All the peculiarities, difficulties, and possibly confusing elements have been explained and elucidated. Each module intends to complement or clarify the existing materia medica, and is the result of many hours of thorough research. You are encouraged to make notes in the books, so you have this information at your fingertips during exams and, of course, when you start your clinic.
The internship is the most important piece of preparation for running your clinic. The idea is to gain more practical experience and apply everything you have learned to treat patients yourself. That is, of course, done under the supervision of a homeopath. What sets our course apart from the others is that we make sure the supervisor is present during the consultations. In this way, we can ensure that the student receives maximum feedback and therefore the best learning results from the internship; other courses often have the student treat the patient without a supervisor being present, because this is often easier to organize, despite its evident downsides.
Another thing we insist on is securing the qualities of the supervisor. Simply being a homeopath and willing to be a supervisor is not enough. We vet the supervisors according to criteria concerning the quality and consistency of their knowledge and practice.
As you may have guessed, the study load of our course is relatively high. You have to understand that becoming a professional requires time and effort. The standards we utilize are often above the minimum requirements. We believe that it is necessary to spend a lot of time to grasp these materials and practices, and we, therefore, go the extra mile to ensure our students become truly independent and competent homeopaths. As has been explained earlier, we provide a course intended as vocational education, and not for mere hobbies. The course is challenging but surely feasible.
According to us, homeopathy is a profession to be taken seriously and requires thorough training and the investment of time, effort, and energy. Other college-level professions require a study of 240 ECTS, so why would homeopathy require only a fraction of that? In Sweden, the homeopathic associations require that a course contains 600 teacher-led hours. In comparison, this is about 10% of what it takes to become a college-level nurse or physiotherapist. If the training to become a homeopath is easy and short, how could we take ourselves seriously, leave alone the established medical professions and the patients?
Obviously, our course in classical homeopathy does not take up 240 ECTS. The study load is about 10-15 hours per week on average (=1200-1800 hours in total). But this also makes sure you have a significant headstart.
